mplayer
mplayer requires a gcc 3.x for compiling. on fedora core 4 installing compat-gcc-32 and entering export CC=gcc32 before ./configure does the trick

whenever i encounter a computer related problem (mostly linux, programming stuff) and succeed in fixing it i post it here ... so that search engines may find it and there is some chance it helps someone.
